Deep in the mountains of the Sonoran Desert cultural anthropologist Carlos Castanada befriends the mysterious Yaqui Indian known as Don Juan. The Indian shaman walks out into the chaparral searching for clues. The sorcerer and apprentice to forego lectures and stuffy sermons, preferring to venture out into wilderness for glimpses of enlightenment. Don Juan mentions most people's lives are like a muggy Sunday afternoon. Nothing much going on, trying to get comfortable but perhaps ate too much. The TV shows are stale but watched anyway. Waiting for excitement but nothing happens. suddenly darkness comes.
Most want more from life's sojourn yet settle for less. I don't think anybody does, Yet that seems to be what happens. According to Don Juan the warrior has two choices: "To act impeccably or to act like a nincompoop." Fear tilts all but the resilient in the wrong direction. In the desert nights Don Juan leads Carlos through perilous situations designed to strengthen his will. The task is arduous yet the gains indescribable.
It all boils down to one's on relationship with the creator. Nothing can substitute for direct contact with the source of all joy. When all earthly pursuits pale, there is only one way out. For this is each person's destiny, to find the truth that leads them back home. At death no one can take our place.
